IBM has struck an OEM deal with Effigent, a provider of business management products for Mac computers. Effigent has embedded IBM's Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files software in a new product to bring IBM's backup technology to the Mac community.

IBM and Effigent are teaming to bring Tivoli data protection technology to Macs.

Under an OEM agreement, Effigent has embedded IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files software in its new product, CDP4Mac.

According to IBM, the deal is part of the company's strategy to find new markets and sales channels for IBM software products and the underlying technologies they are based on. Originally developed for PCs, IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files is a disk backup and recovery tool. A copy of a file is stored on a local disk, while other copies can be sent to a file server or other device.

With Effigent, IBM's technology is being expanded to users of Apple Mac OS X, with an eye toward helping Mac users prevent data loss caused by viruses, file corruption, user error or system failure. "IBM offers innovative software that can be easily integrated into business partner solutions in order to rapidly deliver new solutions that address the needs of their customers," said Daren Hanson, director of IBM OEM software sales, in a statement. "Through this OEM agreement, Effigent has built upon IBM's software to offer a data protection solution developed specifically for the Mac community."

CDP4Mac is built for laptops and desktops-where the majority of corporate data now lives on end-user desktops and laptops, noted Obul Kambham, CEO of Effigent.

"This data often contains work-critical documents and information," Kambham said in a statement. "At the same time, businesses now face more complex compliance regulations and standards. It is therefore more important than ever to ensure this valuable information is not lost. By leveraging IBM's software, we were able to create CDP4Mac to offer a high level of protection to both the individual and corporate Mac user community."

Effigent's CDP4Mac is available now.
