Apple iPhone 5S, 5C Offered for Preorder by China Carrier. Oops.

Marketing stunt or extreme goof-up? China Telecom made the iPhone 5S and 5C available for preorder Sept. 5, then quickly reneged the offer.

If the world needed any more proof that Apple plans to introduce iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C smartphones Sept. 10, China Telecom Corp. offered it Sept. 5.

The carrier posted an advertisement on Sina Corp.'s Weibo—a sort of Twitter meets Facebook in China—enticing consumers to preorder the new iPhones, the Wall Street Journal reported Sept. 6.

The Journal viewed the post, which was quickly taken down, but not before countless Weibo users snapped screenshots and spread the news. The post was replaced—though a portion of the URL was still "iphone5a.asp"—with a simplified landing page and the words, "If you have more hope, please leave your name and telephone here."

Apple traditionally introduces its new iPhones in the United States and releases them to China, with other non-key markets, months later. Last year, the iPhone 5 was introduced Sept. 12 and went on sale in the U.S. the Sept. 24 weekend, but didn't arrive in China until December.

This year, that's changing. The iPhone 5C, it has been widely reported, will be a less expensive version of the iconic device and more in line with the price points favored by Chinese consumers. It's also said that the iPhone will be compatible with China Mobile's new 4G network, enabling the carrier—the largest in the world—to finally officially offer the iPhone. (Thousands of unlocked iPhones already run on it, albeit at slower-than-ideal speeds.)

Apple's investments in China are increasing, and so is its revenue. Apple CEO Tim Cook remarked during a January visit to China, according to the Xinhua news agency, "China is currently our second-largest market. I believe it will become our first. I believe strongly that it will."

On Sept. 4, Apple sent invitations to members of the U.S. media, inviting them to a Sept. 10 event at its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif.

Then, in one of the few surprises Apple has been able to pull off lately, it sent members of the Chinese media invitations to a Sept. 11 event in Beijing.

"Chinese media have received an unexpected invitation to [a Chinese event]. It is rare," Sina reported Sept. 4, according to Google Translate. "Even more surprising is that the conference venue [location is] the Beijing International Trade [Center], which means that Apple will hold a press conference [specifically for China]."

The slogan on the invitation, roughly translated, is "This day is destined to be a dazzling one."

The U.S. invites read: "This should brighten everyone's day."

Both feature a white Apple logo over a series of overlapping, colorful dots—suggesting perhaps that, as rumored, the iPhone 5C will come in a variety of colors.

While the beans-spilling Weibo post may have been a mistake, the Journal suggests it may also have been a marketing stunt, meant to assure Chinese consumers that the new iPhones will arrive soon and dissuade the practice of smuggling new iPhones to China before they're officially released there.

"Vendors have complained about this trend, pointing out it can be hard to secure smuggled Apple products, and that they are more expensive and don't include after-sales services, which can anger customers once the products officially go on sale," reported the Journal.

It added that, according to analysts, consumers sometimes give up on waiting for the iPhone and instead buy smartphones from Apple rivals, like Samsung, and that by the time the phones arrive in China, much of the initial hype has dissipated.

The iPhone 5C is reportedly intended for not only China but India and other emerging markets where prepaid wireless service is the prevailing strategy.

What are they going to do with your fingerprint? If you're not a criminal what in the heck are you worried about? If any government agency asked for mine I'd just give it to them, I have nothing to hide. You leave a finger print behind on everything you touch... if someone wants it, it's not very hard to obtain it. I assume you are like a doomsday prepper with a huge underground shelter that you sit in all day freaking out about the government. Every now and then you look out the window to see what kind of weather the government created with their weather control devices. "Assuming" all this stupid crap is pointless. If someone gets enjoyment hearing me talk about my boat or what random girl I took home from the bar the night before I'll gladly give them the satisfaction. Even IF they can listen to everyone's phone calls, like 91% of adults in the US have cell phones. So with that many millions of people, the NSA is able to listen to everyone's phone calls? Yeah makes no sense AT ALL. If they have that capability they are probably using it to hone in on criminals and/or terrorists which is perfectly fine by me. This isn't some new crazy stuff... Back when everyone used landline phones ANYONE could listen to your conversations... simply open up a phone box on the side of the road, grab a pair and go to town. At least in the modern cell phone world pretty much everything is digital so the only thing anyone could sniff would be some 1's and 0's. Back to the subject at hand, I'm very excited for the 5S to arrive, I'll be one of those fanboys waiting in line to have the first grab at one :)

Obviously (despite Obama's lies denying it), since we know from recent Snowden Leaks that the DEA and NSA have already hacked all of the iPhones (and other mobile phones on the market) to illegally listen in on American's conversations...we can assume that the NSA also worked closely with Apple in advance of launch on this iPhone-5S to ensure that the millions of customers worldwide who embed their fingerprints into their iPhones are helping the NSA and Interpol to build a jumbo, international Fingerprint Library matched to their Names, Addresses, and Phone Numbers. If all OEM Manufacturers of Mobile Handsets go down this same technology path, then we can assume that all Telephone companies will be extorted (or bribed) by the U.S. Government to sell their Fingerprint meta-data registries to the DEA/NSA. Since almost everyone on Earth uses a mobile phone now...instead of this NSA day-by-day covert program-creep with Fingerprinting everyone via their phones, why not just do like Hitler tried and stamp bar-codes on our arms so we can jump straight to the inevitable surrender of all our Constitutional Right to Privacy and Constitutional Right to protection against Self-Incrimination? The fools that inlay/embed their Fingerprints into these new iPhone-5S handsets will have no one to blame but themselves.

I can't wait for the iphone 5s to arrvied but what would be the different between these three phone. ( 5, 5s,5c) I pray that they are faster and you can open up more than one application. I would also like to be able to take picture and talk at the same time. Showing the person on the other end what I'm talking about. I thank you in advance for your new tech. Stay bless and number one.

Its got to be frustrating when apple is the only phone OS that doesn't support multi-app display. Other than the music experience being easier, have you really given a hard look at another phone OS? Most of the fit and finish that made apple stand out are no longer unique to apple.
