    The Apple Watch Edition, star of the show on March 9, elicited audible gasps in the audience when the price ($10,000) was revealed. It will have all the features Apple can cram into it—plus an 18-karat-gold body that's twice as hard as standard gold. Available for preorder on April 10, the limited-edition Edition will be available only in "select retail stores," CEO Tim Cook said.

    The Apple Watch Sport models are aimed at a slightly different, and much wider, audience than the Edition, to say the least. Sport is composed of lightweight anodized aluminum, and comes not in gold but in silver and "space gray." Users will be able to choose one of the five different fluoroelastomer band covers. All Apple Watches, gold or otherwise, come in these screen sizes: 38mm (272 by 340 pixels on screen) and 42mm (312 by 390 pixels). All Apple Watches feature health sensors (accelerometer, built-in heart rate sensor), WiFi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 4.0. Pricing for Sport starts at $349.

Yes, it's a bit confusing, but the midrange Apple Watch is made of highly polished cold-forged stainless steel or aluminum and comes with black stainless steel cases. It comes with three different leather bands: a link bracelet, a Milanese loop and a high-performance fluoroelastomer band. All Apple Watches feature Retina touch-screen displays with Force Touch, and sapphire glass or Ion-X glass cover, depending on the model. They also have a linear actuator (called the Taptic Engine) and built-in speaker for instant tactile feedback. Pricing ranges from $599 to $1,099 for the 42mm case and $549 to $1,049 for the 38mm case.

Apple went a full hour-and-a-half into its press event March 3 reintroducing Apple Watch (remember, it was first introduced to the world six months ago, on Sept. 9) before it dropped the $10,000 bomb. That's the price the company is asking for its solid 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition, the elite device that headlined the event, which also focused on a new notebook and an Apple/HBO television deal. Apple Watch Sport and just plain Apple Watch are the two other "curated" wrist-worn models, which will cost much less ($349 to $1,049). CEO Tim Cook described Apple Watch as the "most personal device we've ever created. It's not just with you; it's on you." Apple, at its event at the Yerba Buena Center in downtown San Francisco, also showed its latest MacBook Air notebook, which now weighs a mere 2 pounds ("I can't even feel it!" kidded Cook onstage) and can be obtained in a gold finish. Despite its impressive sales job, Apple still may not have answered the question: "Why buy a watch, when a phone or tablet can do the job just as well?"
