Apple Launches New Xserve

Steve Jobs says the new Xserve will be five times faster than the previous generation.

Apple unveiled Aug. 7 its new Intel-based Xserve server, which CEO Steve Jobs said is five times faster than the previous generation of Xserves.

The new Xserve has two fast dual-core processors that run either at 2.0GHz, 2.66GHz or 3.0GHz. The dual-core Intel Xeon processors require less cooling time due to better power efficiency and up to 2.25 terabytes of storage. Redundant power supplies are offered as an option.

The Xserve is priced to start at $3,000, and Apple will begin shipping it by October.

The standard configuration for the new Xserve is 1GB of RAM, an 80GB drive and two dual-core 2.0GHz chips.

Jobs made the announcement at Apples Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.
