On Day 2 of tests with the Apple iPhone 3.0 update, eWEEK Labs is finding more and more to like. In this update, Spotlight search is finally in the base operating system, and the effect has been transformational. In addition, refinements made to everyday appsincluding the ability to use e-mail in landscape modekeep the iPhone at the top of the list of mobile devices that deserve attention from enterprise users. There are trade-offs for some of the new features, however, including significant battery drain to enable MobileMe to locate andif directedremotely wipe a lost iPhone.

- Start Search
Flicking the home screen from left to right brings up the Spotlight search interface. As soon as I started entering information, possible results started to appear. - Search Completed
Hitting the Search button retracted the keyboard and yielded the results shown. Tapping on a result brought me directly to the information. The process was almost instantaneous. - Landscape E-mail
I find reading and typing in landscape easier than in portrait mode; this refinement makes an app I use every day much more convenient to access. - Voice Memos
The Voice Memos app records clearly and offers easy-to-use playback controls. Recordings can be e-mailed from inside the app. - Battery Drain
I started using the iPhone at 6:30 a.m. When this screen was grabbed it was only noon, yet the battery is half exhausted because "push" is turned on. The push functionality is needed to enable the Find my iPhone and Remote Wipe functions.
