Enhancements include support for mobile access and improvements in application customization and integration.

Critical Path Inc. has added new capabilities to its namesake communications platform, including support for mobile access and improvements in application customization and integration. The software, used mainly by carriers and service providers, includes integrated, customizable solutions for mobile messaging, personal information management (PIM), and multimedia messaging services (MMS), said officials of the San Francisco company. New features include a consistent interface across e-mail, instant messaging, address books, calendars, task lists and file storage.
The system can also generate alerts automatically based on user-specified events with dynamic routing and delivery via SMS, WAP Push, e-mail or instant messaging. In addition, this version includes a calendar with group scheduling, availability lookup and secure calendar sharing.
Other features include extensible address books that can be integrated with other applications; online file storage with support for both private access and secure sharing; secure instant messaging with presence detection, encryption and support for the latest industry standards; synchronization of address books, calendars and tasks with Microsoft Office and Palm handheld devices. The Critical Path Communication Platform also now features new XML interfaces enabling third-party information-delivery applications to automatically send and receive wireless messages over SMS and WAP Push. Other integration capabilities allow for common personalization and user preferences storage across the platform to be leveraged by third-party applications. The updated platform will be the basis of the new managed message service CP will offer jointly with HP in 2003, company officials said.
