IBMs consolidation of its mainframe and Java development tools in Enterprise Developer provides z/OS development shops with updated tools and ways to connect existing code with new Web- and XML-based applications. Those doing primarily Java development will find it a capable tool as well—although, in this space, it has well-established competition.

$7,500 per CPU is on the high side for a development tool. Those not specifically planning to use the mainframe connectors or development components should investigate lower-end options in the Studio tools line or another Java IDE.

(+) Combines Web, Java, XML and mainframe development tools into one IDE; supports EJB 2.0; has specific support for Apaches Struts framework to help developers produce manageable Web applications; includes tools to create composite Web services integrating several separate information sources.

(-) Largely focused on IBM application server and database products; currently Windows-only (support for other operating systems is coming).

  • Suns NetBeans or Sun ONE Studio traditional mainframe development tools
  • Borlands JBuilder
