Application Development: Labs Gallery: OpenSolaris 2009.06 Puts on a Friendlier Face

By Jason Brooks on 2009-06-25

The third release of Sun's OpenSolaris, Version 2009.06, demonstrates continued progress toward turning a friendlier Solaris face to the world, with noticeable gains made in the areas of package management and creation. What's more, Solaris 2009.06 builds on Sun's work with virtualization and resource management with a new network virtualization framework called Crossbow.

Package Manager

The Package Manager in OpenSolaris 2009.06 received a speed bump and cross-repository searching capabilities.

VirtualBox Support

I was pleased to see that OpenSolaris hosts running VirtualBox can now expose USB devices to guests, but I'd like to see OpenSolaris do a better job rendering VirtualBox interface fonts.

Source Juicer

I hope to see software package availability for OpenSolaris improve through the project's Source Juicer service.

Crossbow

I used OpenSolaris' new Crossbow network virtualization system to create a full test network within my OpenSolaris instance.

Familiar Applications

From a desktop perspective, OpenSolaris offers many of the same applications available on Linux machines.

Time Slider

OpenSolaris' ZFS file system-backed Time Slider snapshotting feature has been extended to add support for creating manual snapshots of directories.

More Time Slider

The system's Time Slider feature also adds an option for exploring previous versions of a particular file.
