Indeed, over the next five years the way developers write code for what Ozzie refers to as the hub will be "fundamentally transforming as we move to the utility computing model in the cloud," he said.

Meanwhile, with its connected devices strategy, Microsoft will provide an environment where applications can be cognizant of all a user's devices at once. For connected entertainment, Microsoft wants to enable users to only have to license media once but to be able to run that media on a series of different devices, so it is accessible wherever they go, he said.

Under the Microsoft connected productivity strategy, Microsoft Office for the PC, Office for mobile and Office Live for the Web are the main areas of focus. Live will allow users to link, share and tag content. Microsoft launched Office Live Workspace as a hub of its connected productivity strategy.

As part of its connected business strategy, Microsoft released a beta of SQL Server Data Services, which offers the benefits of SQL Server for developers into the cloud, Ozzie said. And as part of the company's connected development strategy, Microsoft is building off of its .Net family to deliver tools designed to help developers build better applications that focus on the Web, the cloud and desktop environments.

"I'd like you to bet on us because together we can create extraordinary experiences," Ozzie said to the audience largely made up of developers and designers.
