IBM and BEA to resell company's JCA-based integration adapters.

Peregrine Systems Inc., a developer of infrastructure management software, last week announced it is extending its application integration business with a new unit focused solely on integration.

Named the Integration Adapter Factory, Peregrines newest division will develop and support industry-standard adapters for application server and enterprise application software.

IBM, of Armonk, N.Y., and BEA Systems Inc., of San Jose, Calif., have committed to license and resell Peregrines adapters.

As Peregrine works to make basic software commodities out of application server and enterprise application adapters—programs that have largely been built in-house or by enterprise application integration vendors—it is banking on Java 2 Enterprise Edition to remain the dominant standard for building application infrastructures. The San Diego company will base all its adapters on a common JCA (Java Connector Architecture), according to officials.

Support for XML and additional Web services standards also will be incorporated in Peregrines Connector Architecture, officials said.

Peregrine already has adapters available that provide integration with a range of systems, including applications from SAP AG.

Don LaVallee, director of strategic business operations and IT at Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas, is fairly confident he will use the Peregrine adapters in a major SAP implementation next year, despite the fact that SAP sells it own adapters.

"My gut feeling is that the third- party adapters are probably a lot less expensive and a lot more flexible to modify," said LaVallee, in Camas, Wash. Peregrines "breadth of experience is going to have some value."
