Application Development: eWEEK Labs Looks at Google App Engine


A year after Google launched its Google App Engine--challenging such established players as Amazon Web Services--eWEEK Labs takes a look at some of the applications that have been built on the Web-based platform. While none of the tools were as powerful as those from Facebook or Twitter, what applications are there show promise for Google App Engine.

  • Giftag is an online social-networking site focused on the sharing of gift wishlists. This site is powered by Google App Engine and is a good demonstration of Google's Datastore database capabilities.
  • The GAE SQL Designer is a nice Web-based SQL design tool that has some great potential. Although powered by Google App Engine, it also demonstrated good client-side, JavaScript design.
  • The GAE SQL Designer even allows you to generate SQL in a variety of dialects and even save your work to the server.
  • PackageTrackr is a site that can obtain tracking information from any of several sites. Once it has the information, it then displays the package's path on a map. This is a Google App Engine that also demonstrates integration with Google Maps.
  • The MOMO "memo to self" application lets users keep their ideas and journal items safely stored away on the server. The application uses the Google account login and can even be run on an iPhone.
  • "The Blografica application is a simple online drawing tool. Running under Google App Engine, it uses a great deal of JavaScript and even includes unlimited undo (at least I couldn't find a limit). It interfaces to Google account login and stores your drawings in the Datastore, letting you create a visual blog.
