Cloud Computing: Twitter Site Redesign Apes iPad App with Two-Pane Display
Twitter Sept. 14 trotted out a redesigned Website with the biggest new feature being the addition of a "details pane." Users will see the traditional timeline, plus additional information under each tweet. When users click on the tweet, the pane pops out to the right to display replies, videos, photos, other tweets or a map of where a geotagged tweet was sent from. Twitter also sports mini profiles. When users click a username, they will see a small box of a user's profile info without navigating from the page. This will include a bio and recent tweets. The two-paned view recalls Twitter's newly released iPad application, though Twitter CEO Evan Williams said both were developed separately even if at the same time. Twitter is banking that its 160 million-plus users will like the changes and that advertisers will get more value out of their Promoted Tweets with the new look. The company offers a video detailing the changes, but you can also see the changes here.
