Coalition of Hitachi, IBM, Sun and Veritas cites confusion between the group and the Storage Networking Industry Association.

A 3-week-old storage management coalition has disbanded, its members citing the publics confusion between their group and an even newer organization from the Storage Networking Industry Association. Without ever giving themselves a formal name, a coalition of Hitachi Ltd., IBM, Sun Microsystems Inc. and Veritas Software Corp. launched Oct. 15, mutually promising to ship products with the Common Information Model in 2003, to share that technology with each other and to conduct joint testing at industry events.
But support for CIM, an evolving universal language for storage products, was separately formalized by a larger group of companies this week, with the launch of SNIAs own Storage Management Initiative Forum.
The four members of the disbanded group have been absorbed into the new SNIA organization, representatives said. Such forums are needed to illustrate real-world support for CIM, according to members of both the original coalition and the SMI Forum.
