3wares eight-port Escalade 8500 Serial ATA RAID controller offers workstations and entry-level servers a low-cost, robust storage system. For sites that are already using ATA drives, Serial ATA is definitely the way to go because it offers better features and performance than Parallel ATA systems. Serial ATA can also become a viable alternative to expensive SCSI storage for non-mission-critical applications.

COST ANALYSIS

The Escalade 8500 Serial ATA RAID controller line is priced from $449 to $849, quite reasonable when compared with SCSI RAID controllers. Serial ATA drives are also going to be less expensive than SCSI drives, so Serial ATA disk subsystems will be much more economical than SCSI systems down the road.

(+) High-capacity, native Serial ATA drive support; robust performance; handy management tools.

(-) Lacks expandable on-board memory cache with memory backup.
