EMCs Clariion Gains ATA Options
Low-cost ATA drive options target users seeking a disk-based alternative to traditional tape backups.Storage giant EMC Corp. Wednesday, as expected, announced at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany, low-cost ATA drive options in its midrange Clariion array for users seeking a disk-based alternative to traditional tape backups. The parallel interface 250GB drives, from Maxtor Corp., of Milpitas, Calif., will give users approximately 50 percent savings compared with standard Fibre Channel drives in Clariion CX400 and CX600 models, as first reported in eWEEK. The new, unnamed option, previously code-named Klondike, will also be available in Clariion units sold by Dell Computer Corp., of Round Rock, Texas, officials said. Faster and more reliable serial ATA drives will be available later this year, and smaller-scale CX200 versions will come in the future, sources previously said.
The new option is integrated with Clariions EMC Data Manager backup software, officials of the Hopkinton, Mass., company said. It also supports backup from Computer Associates International Inc., CommVault Systems Inc., Legato Systems Inc. and Veritas Software Corp.
