With Exodus Communications filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization last week, the dream of Web hosters as a big independent industry came to an end. Exodus secured $200 million in debtor-in-possession financing from GE Capital to fund operating expenses and obligations to suppliers and employees. Likely candidates to acquire Exodus include Sprint, Global Crossing or a large consultancy like Electronic Data Systems.

Worldcom Gets Rhythm

WorldCom will get billing relationships with 83,000 customers and a new entree to the midsize-business market if its $40 million offer for most of DSL wholesaler Rhythms NetConnections assets is accepted.

Dot-info, the first global alternative to the popular dot-com domain, opens real-time registration this week. But many catchy phrases and trademarks may already be gone. Afilias, one of seven companies chosen to operate new domains, activated more than 300,000 domains over the past few weeks. More than 50,000 of those were claimed by trademark holders during a "sunset period." Also, this month, dot-biz, a business-only domain, will activate new names.

3g Comes Alive

NTT DoCoMo will commercially launch the worlds first third-generation wireless network today, having conducted a trial of the services since the end of May. The network will let users download data at speeds of 384 kilobits per second and access real-time video at 64 Kbps.
