StorageTek Streamlines its Tape Transition

StorageTek's decision to replace its PowderHorn tape storage system created a stir both inside and outside the storage company.

PowerHorn will be history, perhaps in a decade or so. StorageTek Technology Corp.s decision to replace its venerable tape storage unit was fraught with tension—between engineers and marketers within the company; and between StorageTek and its customers.

The company is replacing PowderHorn with StreamLine. The passing of this baton will determine the fortunes of one of Colorados most eminent technology companies—with 7,100 employees and $2.2 billion in revenues—perhaps for decades to come.
