EnterpriseDB has updated its PostgreSQL-based database to include a free, integrated debugger; improved Oracle capability; and a new DBA Management Server for better database administration. Advanced Server 8.1, which the company announced Feb. 14 at the Open Source Business Conference in San Francisco, is based on the latest version of the open-source PostgreSQL database, 8.1.2. It boasts of a high level of compatibility with Oracle, with the update including features to attract experienced Oracle developers: Oracle-style packages, sequence manipulation, cursor FOR loops, column alias options and REM support. Such features make it easier to migrate Oracle applications to EnterpriseDB with little or no change.
Advanced Server 8.1s integrated debugger is designed to ease development of stored procedures, functions and triggers. The debugger can be used to develop and analyze stored procedures, functions and triggers in applications written for EnterpriseDB, Oracle and PostgreSQL databases. It features multiple breakpoints and step into, step over, restart, continue, stop and exit functions, making it possible for developers to interactively execute code and to squash bugs before putting applications into production.
The updates new DBA Management Server allows for database monitoring, profiling, reporting, security and querying capabilities. Database administrators and developers can use it to analyze, manage and tune multiple databases from a single Web browser. It also features dynamic tuning to make it easier to tune the EnterpriseDB database. EnterpriseDB Advanced Server 8.1 can be downloaded for free at EnterpriseDBs site.
