Little-known Spirian Technologies Inc. this week will try to elbow its way into the desktop migration space with a refined version of its Spirian Deployability tool.

The improvements come as competition with established players such as Marimba Inc. and Miramar Systems Inc. heats up, with users seeking help to migrate from operating systems no longer supported by Microsoft Corp. Spirian, a service provider that has become a tools vendor, polished Deployability with greater flexibility in handling mass deployments, as well as with enhanced interfaces and improved real-time monitoring.

Officials at Chicago-based Spirian said their patent-pending technology is unique in the way it determines what data should be preserved during system migration.

The release is designed to work with desktop environments in multiple locations, using different networks and connection types.

Deployabilitys enhanced browser-based interface allows operators to specify rules, schedule devices for migration and monitor the status of a migration. The interface can be customized so that its look and feel is consistent with corporate standards, and it can be extended to add functions.

"I dont have to be smart about what things I move—just smart about what things not to move. Thats a harder algorithm. Theyve done a good job with that," said one user familiar with the release, who requested anonymity.

The user, whose company employed Deployability to move 50,000 workstations last year, found the site autonomy feature compelling. "Some migrations have to take place at a local level. That was a real-world problem for us," the user said.
