Intel Invests in Wi-Fi
Chip maker announces funding in two companies involved in the wireless LAN technology.Intel Corp. on Wednesday announced funding in two companies involved in "Wi-Fi" wireless LAN technology. Through the Intel Communications Fund, the Santa Clara, Calif., chip maker is investing a minority stake in IP telephony software company TeleSym Inc., as well as providing additional funding to wireless network access company STSN Inc. Intel first invested in STSN in 1999. The company did not disclose the amount of the investments. In October, Intel announced plans to invest $150 million in companies pursuing Wi-Fi technology, which includes anything related to the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standards.
The funds initial investment was in Cometa Networks, the joint venture wireless LAN public hot spot company that Intel, IBM and AT&T Corp. announced earlier this month.
