Albertsons Toying With SmartCarts, GPS Systems

In 18 months, shoppers at Albertson’s 2,500 stores will be able to use handheld scanners that can read a product’s tag and maintain a running tab.

The scanners are connected to a company database and a global positioning system that can help direct shoppers to the location of an item.

When a customer leaves the store, it’s not necessary to wait in a checkout line. The scanner will charge a customer’s credit card upon exiting the store. "The new technology not only allows us to be more efficient, but it also allows us to connect better with customers at the most intimate levels," said Lawrence R. Johnston, CEO of Albertsons.
