TIBCO Software extends its BPM platform with applications from newly acquired Staffware.

TIBCO Software inc., a developer of enterprise application integration software, is in the business process management game now, having acquired Staffware plc.

With the completion of the acquisition, announced last week, TIBCO will address IT and business users with an integrated offering that spans BPM (business process management), workflow and EAI (enterprise application integration).

TIBCO officials in Palo Alto, Calif., last week unfolded a road map for optimizing the renamed TIBCO Staffware Process Suite to integrate it with its integration software and to extend the BPM platform with new capabilities.

TIBCO Staffware Process Suite enables users to develop service-oriented architecture-based business processes, as well as a process engine. TIBCO expects to have the suite optimized to interoperate with its namesake integration platform by next quarter, company officials said.

The new TIBCO BusinessWorks module, due next quarter, will introduce a Manual Activities Plug-in module that supports exception processing and application-specific integration processes, officials said. A FormBuilder component supports the design, deployment and management of contextual forms and business interfaces.

Version 3.0 of the TIBCO Staffware Process Suite, due the first quarter of next year, will provide better support for Microsoft Corp.s .Net development platform, as well as additional database and systems management integration. At the same time, the upgrade will include a new look and feel for its process definer, business activity monitoring and portal features.

"The big thing [TIBCO is] recognizing is that customers dont want just workflow, the front end—and they dont want just the back end, EAI. They really want it all to work together," said Meta Group Inc. analyst Hollis Bischoff in Los Altos, Calif.

"They really want to think of systems as an extension of themselves, and processes is a way to collaborate, so bringing them together is very significant."
