VMware Inc. seeks to push its workstation software beyond the high-end technology expert into more general enterprise use with the release this week of the latest version of its desktop virtual machine software.

Version 4.5 supports a preboot execution environment to let users quickly provision VMs via a network. It also makes USB devices connected to the host available to VMs and increases the memory limits for each VM to 3.6 GB.

There is also more support for a wider variety of operating systems, including beta versions of "Longhorn"—the next version of Windows—and Linux kernels in the 2.6 series.

VMware has decreased the price of its Workstation software from $300 to $189.
