Traffic jams aren’t just a problem in major U.S. metropolitan areas. They’re happening all over the world, especially in developing countries where economic and industrial growth are outpacing municipal infrastructure upgrades. The 2010 IBM Commuter Pain Study surveyed more than 8,000 commuters in 20 cities on six continents to get a sense of the problem and how commuters feel about traffic’s impact on their health and productivity. A worldwide team of scientists, industry experts, and IT professionals at IBM are researching traffic information management solutions like automated tolling, real-time traffic prediction, congestion charging, and intelligent route planning to help alleviate traffic and improve quality of life for commuters.
