The Department of Health and Human Services announced a windfall of cash in grants and contracts to promote the use of health IT to reduce medical errors; increase sharing of information between providers, laboratories, pharmacies, and patients; decrease unnecessary testing, and ease patient transition between health care facilities like hospitals and nursing homes. The funds will also be used to develop state and regional networks that share health information. Such "regional laboratories" are often cited as necessary building blocks as well as the ideal platforms to test possible nationwide solutions.
