According to the FDA's guidelines, the RFID tag must not contain information about health care providers or patients and may not substitute for other labeling control systems or linear bar codes.

The Food and Drug Administration has set forth guidelines for using RFID (radio frequency identification)in programs testing the feasibility and efficacy of the technology to prevent counterfeiting. The RFID tag must not contain information about health care providers or patients and may not substitute for other labeling control systems or linear bar codes. The tags must also work at specific radio frequencies and may not obscure or interfere with existing labels or linear bar codes.
