Usability Excellent

Performance Good
Interoperability Good
Manageability Excellent
Scalability Good
Security Good
Apples first foray into the enterprise server market is a powerful 1U rack-mountable device. Blending open-source functionality and Mac OS X usability, the Xserve will likely find its way into small businesses and workgroups.

COST ANALYSIS

The Xserve ranges in price from $2,999 for a stripped-down single-CPU system (one 60GB drive) to $7,499 for a two-CPU system with maxed-out memory and storage (four 120GB drives). The key cost savings come from the bundled applications, which should make the Xserve more economical when compared with similar Intel-based offerings from Microsoft Corp. and Novell Inc.

(+) Solid management tools, tons of functionality.

(-) Currently lacks power supply and cooling redundancy; no JFS.
