Crystal Reports is the most programmable reporting system around, making it an excellent way to add reporting to internal applications or an internal portal. It is also a good choice for simpler production reporting jobs, although it lacks the integration and breadth of analysis tools some competitors provide.

The most common version of the package, Professional Edition, costs a middle-of-the-road $495. The high-end Advanced Edition provides significant enterprise report generation capacity at a low price of $1,995 per server, much less than the cost for Crystal Decisions previous Web-based reporting option.

(+) Provides Java and Windows APIs; new report server and Web-based report client; report component repository and custom templates allow for greater report standardization and component reuse; tight integration with Microsoft Office applications.

(-) All versions (including server components) run only on Windows; lacks the combined reporting and OLAP features found in some competitors; HTML report viewer doesnt allow sorting or filtering.
