Intel Adds Pair of Itanium Processors
New two-way-capabable Itaniums at 1.4-GHz and 1.6-GHz, each with 3MB of level-3 cache, aim to trim the total cost of ownership of Itanium-based servers.Intel Corp. on Tuesday launched a pair of new Itanium processors geared at reducing the total cost of ownership of Itanium-based servers. The additions flesh out Intels Itanium processor line, filling in niches in its product portfolio. Intel launched new two-way-capable Itaniums at 1.4-GHz and 1.6-GHz, each with 3MB of level-3 cache. The 1.4-GHz chip is available now, while the 1.6-GHz model will ship in May.
Intel said the new chips mark another step in the companys drive to offer Itaniums with double the performance of its Xeon processor by 2007, while maintaining the same overall system cost. Intel said Friday that it plans to use a common chipset infrastructure and socket for both architectures in 2007.
