Intel last week rolled out three low-voltage Xeon processors aimed at dense computing environments and is planning to launch next year two energy-efficient dual-core chips.

Intel last week rolled out three low-voltage Xeon processors aimed at dense computing environments and is planning to launch next year two energy-efficient dual-core chips.

Intels low-voltage "Irwindale" chips range from 55- to 110-watt power consumption and are designed for such systems as blades and rack-optimized systems.

In the first half of next year, Intel will release the "MV Dempsey" chip for rack systems and the "Sossaman" chip for blades. The Sossaman will consume 31 watts of power, officials said.

As systems become smaller and processors more powerful, power consumption and heat have become higher priorities for IT administrators. Chip manufacturers and OEMs are looking for ways to offer more performance in smaller packages while reducing the amount of heat generated.
