Executive Summary: Sun ONE Application Server 7.0 Standard Edition

Usability Fair
Capability Fair
Performance Fair
Interoperability Good
Manageability Fair
Scalability Fair
Security Good
Sun ONE Application Server 7.0 Standard Edition is a low-cost yet fully J2EE 1.3- compatible system. The product line doesnt yet have the breadth of its competitors, but for targeted deployments on single- or dual-CPU systems, Application Server 7.0 is a good choice.

At $2,000 per CPU for Standard Edition, Sun ONE Application Server 7.0 is substantially less expensive than top-tier players IBM and BEA Systems Inc. However, the Sun platform also doesnt have the industry support or scope of those players. For departmental or vertical deployments, however, Sun ONE Application Server is a good candidate.

(+) Full J2EE 1.3 functionality, including Enterprise JavaBeans 2.0 and built-in message queuing; tight integration with Sun ONE Studio IDE; included Sun ONE Studio development tool and Sun ONE Directory Server LDAP server.

(-) Clustering and failover features are not available yet; management console lacks any run-time information or performance monitoring other than displaying the server log files (command-line tools do provide some run-time statistics).
