Sun will focus on commodity technology, such as blades,
rack-mount servers and MySQL technologies, in an effort to expand
beyond its traditional association with high-end storage and servers. Sun Microsystems wants to show that it is more than just a high-end
enterprise shop.
The Santa Clara, Calif., company, which has traditionally catered to large
financial firms, telecommunications companies and the federal government, is
looking to expand its reach to include small yet tech-savvy companies with a
need for a more robust IT infrastructure to handle Web 2.0 and other business
concerns.
To further its initiative, Sun announced a new Web site March 18 that
targets SMBs (small and midsize businesses) as well as an expanded program that
offers free trials of its products for potential customers, said Christine
Beury, the companys director of systems marketing.
