New component discovery and dependency mapping tools, along with new partnerships, are helping one management software vendor make its case to users looking for compliance and IT consolidation help.

nLayers Inc., based in San Jose, Calif., last week said it will resell its automated discovery and relationship mapping appliance to industry players with the release of its nLayers InSight SDK (Software Development Kit). At the same time, business service management provider Managed Object Solutions Inc. became its first OEM.

"Existing corporate accounts are using our technology in a complementary way to their [IBM] Tivoli, [Hewlett-Packard Co.] OpenView or other tools. Whats missing in their arsenal is a good way to know what they have out there and the interdependencies in their applications," said Gili Raanan, president and CEO of nLayers.

Users at Interwoven Inc. use the tool for Sarbanes-Oxley Act compliance as well as for system consolidation, according to Alex Sagers, director of corporate IT at the Sunnyvale, Calif., company.

Although vendors such as Collation Inc., Relicore Inc. and others provide automated discovery and dependency mapping, Managed Objects chose to embed the InSight agentless discovery and optimization appliance within its dynamic management tools for a more detailed picture of IT services.

"Theres an ecosystem of automated dependency mapping tools. We went after an approach that was passive and agentless because it is the fastest to implement," said Charles Manning, director of product management at the McLean, Va., company. Managed Objects also has adapters for Collations mapping tool.

The nLayers InSight appliance combines the up-to-the-minute view of application dependencies that are provided with agent-based approaches with the ease of implementation of passive devices that take a periodic snapshot of dependencies.

The nLayers InSight SDK is available now. Managed Objects will release its integrated offering later in the first quarter.
