Having a recession doesn't hurt MS systems either, as companies are more willing to stick with investments already in place and working.

Collaboration software needs deployment and support, especially as it gets integrated with MS Exchange mail servers, office apps and the Web. Microsoft continues to extend office applications internally across business departments.

It’s longevity in vertical applications and adaption in XML Web services markets keep its technology a strong skill set for enterprise architects, software developers and middleware consultants.

Applications of wireless sensors in everything from car sharing services and inventory management to logistics and the supply chain make engineering and RFID deployment skills a valuable career asset.

The battle for complete dominance in the enterprise software space between Oracle and SAP is a constant. Deep enterprise investments in technologies from Oracle’s Siebel, SAP or Progress make software development, systems integration expertise and long-term maintenance know-how skills for the long haul.
Six Sigma/Lean Six Sigma
Alignment is not a buzzword. There are sequenced management approaches like those found in six sigma and lean six sigma that may have roots in manufacturing, but are being employed in IT and business units across many companies. Do not underestimate the value of quality management.
SOAP
The continued ascension of Web services in the enterprise make it a vital skill set as more technologies are being opened up to talk to each other. The SOAP framework is an essential technology, and those with knowledge and working experience have staying power.

Testers and quality assurance professionals with Tcl experience are needed in today’s quick prototype application environments. Business managers want to easily test functionality and graphical user interfaces using one common language in Tcl.

There’s no secret in the formula: For the most part, the more IT skills you have, the better pay you get. The following alphabetical gallery lists the top 25 skills in technology with increased demand in pay for the third quarter. These are non-certified skills, meaning they don’t necessarily require a technology worker to have a certification, yet they do require experience. These skills were sourced by Foote Partners, a Vero Beach, Fla., technology research company that tracks certified and non-certified IT skills.
One certified skill that lost value over the summer was security, which had been the most resilient and consistently growing skill set for four straight years. David Foote, chief research officer and founder of Foote Partners, said the following in an Oct. 29 statement about the first decline and downward trend in security certifications since 2006:
"The decline in market values for [security] certifications that has suddenly appeared in our new benchmark research is simply an indication that Act One is coming to an end, not a sign that security talent is being devalued. ... We're entering a transition period time for security professionals, and they'll have to be patient while it plays out."
