Netware 6

In addition to being a good upgrade from previous versions, NetWare 6 represents a significant turning point for Novell. Besides augmenting its popular file and print services, Novell hopes to use its new consulting personnel to create cutting-edge information management systems centralized on portal technologies.

SHORT-TERM BUSINESS IMPACT // NetWare 6 should plug and play easily in current NetWare shops, keeping upgrade costs low, and its new native file-sharing capabilities make it attractive for heterogeneous environments.

LONG-TERM BUSINESS IMPACT // To fully reap the benefits of NetWare 6, IT managers must invest programmers and consultants to tune NetWare 6s portal technologies to their IT infrastructures. However, doing so will create significant cost savings and efficiency down the road.

PROS: Doesnt require thick-client NetWare software to function; notable Internet printing abilities.

CONS: The new CIFS protocol performs much more slowly than native NetWare file-sharing protocol.
