Top 10 Disruptive Technologies Affecting the Data Center (
Page 1 of 11 ) Several technologies are poised to shake up the data center. Gartner Research
Vice President Carl Claunch provided eWEEK with a list of 10 technologies to
watch. They are all relatively immature today, Claunch said, but will mature
enough for widespread use in the next 18 to 36 months. In many cases, he said, maturity
will occur only for a subset of each technology or for well-defined
applications, with full maturity for more general use lagging beyond the
three-year window.
The 10 technologies that follow should be considered in conjunction
with many proven, fully mature technologies, as well as others that did not
make this list but can also provide value for many companies.
Unified Communications
By 2010, 80 percent of unified communications components will be purchased as part of a broader product suite. Unified communications functionality draws from five core markets, each of which is evolving toward convergence in its own way. The key markets are: voice mail; PBX (which is evolving toward IP PBX), e-mail and calendaring; conferencing and collaboration; and IM and presence. Unified communications also draws functions from some tangential markets.
