MandrakeSofts Mandrake Linux 8.2 does a good job distilling the complexities of Linux into a solid, user-friendly desktop operating system. While Mandrakes configuration utilities lacked some of the tools that we admired in SuSE Linux, Mandrakes own font and file sharing utilities surpassed what we found in the other distributions we reviewed.

Cost Analysis

Mandrake 8.2 comes in $39.99 Standard and $69.99 PowerPack editions. Companies that deploy Mandrake will have to budget for training, but as open-source software, Mandrake Linux may be copied freely.

(+) Mandrake-specific tools for Samba file sharing and font installation; nice control panel application.

(-) Control panel help is wanting; interface is still more challenging than Windows.
