Dell woos students with a slew of new features for its Inspiron R line of notebooks, offering a slimmer, stiffer frame, a Web cam and a choice of four colors.

Computer maker Dell announced the refresh of its media-centric Inspiron R notebooks, available in screen sizes ranging for 14 inches to 17 inches and including features such as a Web cam, smudge-resistant palm rests, a full-size keyboard and a stiffer frame.

The computers, which start from $449, are available via the company's Website and also through Dell's latest retail partner, Fry's Electronics.

The notebooks offer Intel Core i3 and i5 mobile processor options, built-in wireless connectivity, an optional Intel Wireless Display that allows for a cable-free connection to most HDTVs when paired with a separate third-party Intel Wireless Display TV adapter and optional 1GB ATi graphics.

Among the other features are up to 640GB hard disk drives on select models; up to 8GB DDR3 memory; touchpad with integrated scrolling and gestures; a dedicated 10-key number pad on the 15-and 17-inch systems that gives users additional keys for more shortcuts; Dell Dock, which organizes music, videos and photos and puts most commonly used apps up top; DataSafeOnline data backup and recovery; and DataSafeLocal, a way to create backup copies of the factory image.

"The Inspiron R takes the rock-solid Inspiron line and amps up the cool factor with a sexy and practical machine for entertainment and social networking, along with all the usual home, school and work functions," said Glen Robson, vice president of product marketing for Dell. "Photos, videos and personal files can also be securely stored and shared with DataSafeOnline for peace of mind right out of the box. This is a laptop that moms will love and youths will ask for."

For users who need a laptop as soon as possible, popular configurations of the new Inspiron R are also available via Dell's FastTrack program, which can ship systems within 24 hours. By upgrading to next business day shipping, new Inspiron R systems can arrive within 48 hours. Customers can choose Next Business Day Shipping for an additional charge starting at $69. Students also have the option to purchase any version of Microsoft Office 2010 preinstalled on their Inspiron R laptops.
