EMC subsidiary Iomega announced a rack-mounted server solution aimed at the midmarket, offering a 4TB model and a 2TB model, which is priced under $2,000.

Iomega, a subsidiary of infrastructure technology provider EMC, announced the release of the StorCenter Pro ix4-200r NAS rack-mount server. Powered by the EMC LifeLine operating system, the 2TB version is $1799.99 and a 4TB version is available for $2799.99.

The four-drive network-attached storage, rack-mounted server offers such features as iSCSI block-level access, multiple RAID configurations, folder quotas support, jumbo frames, Windows Active Directory support, remote access and management and IP security camera support. EMC says the StoreCenter Pro offers a first for its rack-mount storage capacity and price category: VMware Ready certification for vitualization installations.

EMC says the solution offers small and midsize businesses economical file sharing, fast data throughput and cross-platform support, as well as a three-year warranty. The ix4-200r contains 4 disk drive bays, a 3.2GHz Intel Celeron processor, 1GB system memory and one Gigabit Ethernet connection in a 1U (1.75 inch) high chassis that is mountable in NEMA-standard 19-inch racks. The ix4-200r ships with disk drives fully populated, for a total capacity of 2TB or 4TB.

The StorCenter Pro also offers SMBs advanced media support. The ix4-200r includes UPnP support through an integrated DLNA certified media server. It also includes an iTunes server and supports PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) via one of three USB 2.0 ports, as well as Bluetooth uploads from a cell phone, Pocket PC or BlackBerry device.

"The feature set and EMC software innovation in the new StorCenter Pro makes this rackmount NAS a powerful and affordable networking solution for today's dynamic small and mid-sized businesses," said Jonathan Huberman, president of Iomega and the Consumer and Small Business Products division of EMC, in a statement. "Rock solid reliability and ease-of-use are hallmarks of the new ix4-200r NAS."

Huberman says Iomega is the only entry-level NAS provider that incorporates EMC's storage technologies into products like the new ix4-200r, which not only separates the company from the competition but sets apart the ix4-200r from similar rack-mount units.

In an effort to provide a complete solution, ix4-200r NAS also provides data backup and protection for desktops and laptops with integrated EMC Retrospect Express backup software. During the set-up process, users choose files and folders for scheduled automatic backups. After that, any changes or additions are updated and saved automatically.

For additional protection, the ix4-200r includes MozyHome online backup service, a way to store, protect and access files. MozyHome provides 2GB of free online storage per user for backing up selected folders directly from their computers to EMC data centers. SMBs can also upgrade to unlimited online storage for just $4.95 per month per client computer, or to the centrally managed MozyPro plan for businesses.
