Earth Day—founded by Sen. Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970—is an annual day intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for Earth's natural environment. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. The international network reaches over 19,000 organizations in 192 countries, while the domestic program engages 10,000 groups and more than 100,000 educators coordinating millions of community development and environmental-protection activities throughout the year. Thanks to the wizards behind the applications offered at Apple's App Store, you can now participate in more ways than ever. Applications include screensavers, green news aggregation sites, and even applications that can help you save money on your light bulbs and reduce the amount of trash you produce. What's important to keep in mind is that every day is Earth Day—because we've only got one, so use the time today (and these apps) to take a look at what you can do year round to protect our planet. Every little bit helps, and not only will you save money, but you'll likely feel a little bit better about yourself, too.
