The days of a "World's No. 1 Dad" coffee mug or a necktie as an appropriate Father's Day gift have long since passed, what with the multitude of high-tech gadgets and gizmos our fathers crave these days. As with most holidays, it seems, the day has become more of an opportunity for retailers to offer discounts on everything from electronics to golf clubs and suit jackets—in fact, the Associated Men's Wear Retailers formed a National Father's Day Committee in New York City in the 1930s with the goals of legitimizing the holiday in the minds of people and managing the holiday as a commercial event in a more systematic way, all to boost sales during the holiday. None of that matters, of course, if you find the perfect gift that lets your papa know how thankful you are to have him in your life. From e-readers and tablet computers to smartphones, video game consoles and digital music players, today's dads may not have grown up with some of the more familiar cutting-edge technologies, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be overjoyed to receive an iPad 2 on Father's Day.
