: USR8022 Wireless Cable/DSL Router"> Executive Summary: USR8022 Wireless Cable/DSL Router

Usability Good
Capability Excellent
Performance Fair
Interoperability Good
Manageability Excellent
Scalability Fair
Security Good
In its quest for reach and bandwidth—the holy grail of SOHO wireless devices—U.S. Robotics has put a cable/DSL modem with an integrated two-port Ethernet switch, 802.11b-compatible access point and print server into one box. The USR8022 has plenty of bandwidth, which means more users have faster access. However, building materials can be a factor in the overall efficacy of the product. In the building where we tested it, the range of the device wasnt much better than other wireless access points weve tested.

COST ANALYSIS

Although U.S. Robotics has crammed a lot into the USR8022, it costs only $180 and wont take a technician to perform the basic setup. On the other hand, someone will have to read the manual to implement the 256-bit security and media access control address authentication.

(+) More bandwidth; backward-compatible; many integrated components are easy to set up.

(-) High-bandwidth signal is susceptible to interference from common building materials.
