Two more enterprise customers have chosen outsourcing as a means of reducing the complexity of their own data centers, extending the capacity of their infrastructures, and improving overall site performance. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will use Akamais EdgeSuite services, while CreditTrade selected managed services from Digital Island.
Michael Ruffolo, executive VP of global sales, services, and marketing at Akamai, says CDC is one of the governments most-frequently visited sites, and accordingly must ensure uninterrupted Web operations despite unpredictable flash traffic.
In October, during the height of the anthrax scare, for instance, cdc.gov experienced record traffic from over nine million unique visitors from more than 200 countries, as the public rushed to the site for information about the deadly disease.
CDC can keep its performance up and its capital costs down by off-loading the delivery of its Web site to Akamais distributed platform, comprised of more than 13,000 servers within more than 1,000 networks in 63 countries.
Digital Island is offering its 2Way Web Service family of products to global credit securities firm CreditTrade.
Clive Castle, CreditTrade CTO, says his organization cut its facilities-operation costs by 30% using an outsourcer. He says CreditTrade handles 5,000 interactive IP-based transactions per day.
CreditTrade offers a combination of telephone and online services to investment banks, insurance companies, and fund managers. Traders can post and negotiate buy-and-sell prices online, while more sophisticated transactions are often conducted over the phone.
Digital Island will provide two services to CreditTrade: 2Transact and 2Manage. 2Transact combines managed hosting in London, New York and Asia, including full operating and database-system support, with access to Digital Islands global private network to complete online transactions. 2Manage lets CreditTrade monitor hosted applications and directly maintain databases.
Terms of the Akamai and Digital Island deals were not disclosed.
