Enterprise Mobility: Dell Streak Tablet, Unlike Apple iPad, Is Also a Phone, Supports Flash

By Michelle Maisto on 2010-05-25

Dell introduced the Streak, a tablet with a 5-inch touch screen and the Android OS, May 25. Unlike the Apple iPad, the Streak is also a phone, offers multitasking and can support Adobe’s Flash for viewing video and animations. Its size, however, may give some consumers pause. Some analysts have called it an oversized Android smartphone targeted at high-end consumers wanting a tablet-style Web-browsing experience. “The main challenge for the 5-inch Streak is that its overall size may be a little too large for in-pocket smartphone usage, while its screen may be a little too small for an in-home tablet experience,” Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston told eWEEK. "Some consumer or prosumer segments may prefer to wait for other Dell devices with smaller form factors or bigger displays.” The Streak will arrive in the United Kingdom in June and in the United States later this summer.

Dell Streak

The Dell Streak features a 5-inch capacitive multitouch WVGA display and runs Google’s Android OS. Widgets and applications can populate the home screen for quick access.

Dell Streak Left Side

A view of the left side of the Dell Streak. Like the Apple iPad, the Streak measures 0.5 inch thick. The Streak’s screen measures 5 inches across (Dell has yet to release exact specs), versus the 9.56 by 7.47 inches of the iPad, Dell is reportedly working on 7- and 10-inch versions of the Streak.

Dell Streak Right Side

And now the view from the right. Also unlike the iPad, the Streak comes with a 5-megapixel camera, which can easily upload images to sites such as Facebook. WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity are also built in.

Dell Streak Navigation

Google Maps is integrated in the Streak and offers users turn-by-turn navigation, with both street and satellite views. Its speedy processor is Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon.

Reaching for the Power Button

The Streak features a cleanly designed façade, though analysts wonder whether consumers will go for its bigger-than-smartphone, smaller-than-a-tablet size. Pricing details have not yet been released.

Packaging

Cloud computing has been called a threat to the environment, but the Dell tablet boasts a green streak, arriving in packaging made from 100 percent sustainable and compostable bamboo.
