Enterprise Mobility: First Look: Motorola Droid X Challenges iPhone 4 as Multimedia Workhorse

NEW YORK—Executives from Verizon Wireless, Motorola, Google and Adobe Systems convened at the Mandarin Oriental hotel here June 23 to unveil the Motorola Droid X, the latest in a growing line of popular Droid mobile phones offered by No. 1 wireless carrier Verizon. The Droid X, shown in this slide show, offers 720 HD video capture and playback on a 4.3-inch, 854-by-480 display, and an 8-megapixel camera. The Droid X is powered by a 1GHz processor and runs Android 2.1. In short, it's a multimedia workhouse geared to compete with Apple's iPhone 4. The Droid X will be available beginning July 15 from Verizon and participating retailers such as Best Buy for $199 with a $100 mail-in rebate and a two-year contract.

The Droid X features WiFi hot-spot functionality to connect up to five WiFi-capable devices.

Swype Preloaded

Swype is preloaded as an app on the Droid X, allowing users to move their fingers across the keys in a swiping motion to write e-mail messages instead of tapping keys.

Exchange, Gmail Enterprise Support

The Droid X supports Microsoft Exchange and Gmail for Enterprise to please corporate road warriors.

Flash Support

Love it or hate it, the Droid X supports Adobe's Flash Player 10.1.

Availability

The Droid X will become available from Verizon and participating retailers July 15, and operating system upgrades to Android 2.2, or "Froyo," will begin later this summer.
