Mobile & Wireless: Google Earth Now on iPhone, iPod Touch

Google continued its momentum in tailoring its applications for Apple's iPhone with the adaptation of its Google Earth application for the iPhone and Apple's iPod Touch. Google Earth, used by consumers and businesses that require geographical visualization, maps the Earth via the superimposition of images from satellites and aerial photography. One wonders when Google Earth for the G1 will be available. In the meantime, check out these Google Earth pictures rendered via the iPhone.

  • The Google Earth app for the iPhone and iPod Touch displays the same imagery and boasts the same navigational capabilities as the desktop client.
  • Look for pizza places in your general area. With the Search Near Me function, query results not only will be geolocated within Google Earth, but also will be relevant to users according to their location.
  • For example, in San Francisco, a search for "pizza" will show the precise location of a collection of San Francisco pizza restaurants in Google Earth. Users choose to allow the app to approximate their locations using GPS, Wi-Fi or cell tower identity information.
  • View Panoramio photos, which are geolocated photos of places, from your iPhone. Check out Mount Fuji.
  • After directing Google Earth to Mount Fuji on their iPhone, users can access and read Wikipedia entries on their subjects of interest with a few swipes of the touch-screen.
  • Google Earth can be downloaded for free from Apple's App Store. The app is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch models running on EDGE, 3G and other Wi-Fi networks.
