Each year sees a flood of new technologies hit the marketplace, much of them the inevitable next generation of products already in our hands. Whether lighter, smaller, more powerful, or merely tweaked with better design and software, these products integrate themselves into our lives to the point where you start taking for granted the ability to pull down your email or a book from anywhere. Given how it's the time of year to be thankful, however, it's perhaps also time to give these devices the attention (and maybe even a bit of respect) they deserve for enlivening your personal and professional lives.??íFrom the Apple iPad to the Kindle Fire, products that have helped redefine and expand the tablet market, to cutting-edge smartphones such as the Droid Razr and the evolving line of Windows Phone "Mango" devices, to integrated technologies such as the ultra-tough Gorilla Glass that spares smartphone screens in the event of a dropped or crushed device, the following hardware and software have impacted lives in ways both miniscule and truly massive. Some of these, including ultrabooks and BBX, will likely have a substantial effect on the lives of many tech users over the coming year.

Apple's iPad kick-started the consumer tablet industry and created a market for thousands of third-party developers' apps and games. If Apple holds to its established release schedule for new editions, the next iPad is likely arriving early in 2012.
