Lucent signs a multiyear contract worth up to $1 billion to upgrade Sprint PCS Group's high-speed wireless network.

Lucent Technologies Inc. has won a multiyear contract worth up to $1 billion to upgrade Sprint PCS Groups high-speed wireless network, company officials announced Tuesday. Lucent, of Murray Hill, N.J., will provide Sprint with the Flexent CDMA Modular Cell 4.0 base station and various other hardware and software, as well as the technical support for the upgrade.
Sprint, of Kansas City, Mo., runs a wireless network based on CDMA (code division multiple access) technology. The Lucent upgrade will help in the quest to improve current 3G1x services and provide advanced data services based on CDMA2000 1xEV-DV technology in the future, Sprint officials said.
