Enterprise Mobility: Motorola and Verizon Unleash Droid X

By Andrew Garcia on 2010-06-25

Motorola and Verizon Wireless have unveiled the latest Android smartphone, the Droid X. When it ships July 15, the Droid X will run Android 2.1, but will be upgradable to Version 2.2 down the road. Priced at $199 after a $100 rebate, the Droid X will be available at that price to any Verizon customer with a contract expiring before the end of 2010.

Motorola Droid X

Motorola's Droid X for Verizon Wireless features a large 4.3-inch WVGA multitouch screen.

Droid X Size

Despite the large screen, the device is mostly thin and not too heavy, measuring 2.6 by 5.0 by 0.4 inches and 5.47 ounces. However, the device widens toward the top near the cameras.

Froyo

Shipping July 15, the Droid X will come with Android 2.1 but will be upgradable to Version 2.2, or "Froyo," later in the summer, which will add Adobe Flash 10.1. The SDK for Froyo is available now.

Ports

On the left side of the device, the Droid X offers a MicroUSB and an HDMI port. The HDMI cable may be purchased separately for $25.

Buttons

The Droid X only has an on-screen keyboard, but the device features Menu, Home, Back and Search keys. Below the keys is one of the Droid X's three microphones, which work together to provide directional audio capture and noise cancellation.

Top

The top edge of the Droid X features a lock key, a 3.5-millimeter headset jack and the second microphone.

Right

The right edge has the volume controls and an action key, set to start the camera. When the camera app is open, the volume keys may be used to zoom in and out.

Camera

The 8-megapixel camera works for both still and video, capturing video at 720p. There's also an LED flash.

Camera Options

The still camera offers several different shoot modes.

Multishot

I liked the multishot capabilities of the still camera, although the pictures are only 1-megapixel resolution by default in this mode.

Third Microphone

The third microphone may be found at the back bottom of the Droid X.

Battery

The Droid X features a 1540 MAhr battery, rated for 8 hours of talk time or over 9 days of standby time.

Blockbuster

High-quality media is an emphasis for the Droid X. One of the available apps is Blockbuster, offering movie downloads for rental or purchase. It appears movie downloading is confined to WiFi connections.

Skype

Motorola and Verizon claim that Skype is optimized.
