New Standard Could Give Wi-Fi a Voice
Vendors work on Wi-Fi roamingA group of vendors has launched efforts to develop a standard for handling voice data on Wi-Fi networks when roaming across different access points. The group, including Airespace and Spectralink, is seeking permission to create a Fast Roaming study group within the IEEE standards body. Current Wi-Fi standards produce a brief interruption in voice transmission when roaming across access points. This effort is in addition to the IEEEs quality of service standard in progress, 802.11e, that can prioritize voice packets over data.
